Ubuntu is a sense of responsibility toward one's household, community, and society. It can be seen in the smile of a stranger passing or while lending a potjie pot to a neighbor. Being born and raised in South Africa, Dale Gray has kept this philosophy alive through cooking and sharing recipes. During her years of teaching English in Southern Korea, she met a young Southern American soldier whom she would later marry and finally move with to Brookhaven, Mississippi.

Living in the southern parts of three countries has opened Gray to entirely different cultures and cuisines, but it wasn't until she and her husband, DJ, were living in Mississippi that Gray started experimenting with both South African and South Korean flavors, in addition to the newfound Southern American dishes introduced to her. Gray began sharing her recipes through her blog on, on social media platforms, and now in South of Somewhere. Not only does this book provide mouthwatering recipes but it also dives into Cape Malay culture and its pertinent impact on South African cooking. After moving away from her close-knit family (who have lived in her hometown of Wellington, South Africa, for generations), Gray didn't just reside in South Korea for six years, she lived there. From spending Sunday afternoons strolling through Korean markets, asking questions, and exploring different restaurants, she made it her mission to be curious about a culture so unfamiliar to her - becoming a better cook along the way.
